An exciting opportunity has become available for a Water Quality Analyst to join the Organics team within the Chemistry Laboratory at Sydney Water.

About us

We are the largest dedicated water and wastewater laboratory in the southern hemisphere with Tier 1 quality in our laboratory and field performance. This allows us to provide the highest level of assurance to the community of Sydney Water’s quality product.

We undertake sampling and analysis across all products, such as source water, drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, environmental waters (i.e. river, beaches, ocean sediments), stormwater, biosolids, sludges, grit & screenings.

About the role

Reporting to the Chemistry Laboratory Manager, your daily duties will include undertaking routine and non-routine laboratory preparation and instrumental analyses of samples from a variety of environments, using a range of equipment in accordance with procedures to meet customer quality and time expectations and regulatory and operational requirements.

  • Carry out laboratory preparation and analysis using instrumentation within agreed customer timeframes.
  • Identify and report potential opportunities to optimise assets, equipment, systems and processes.
  • Training and mentoring staff
  • Demonstrated experience in ICPMS, ICMS, LCMSMS or GCMSMS including maintenance, troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance requirements for analysis of water and wastewater products, including NATA ISO 17025 accreditation and ISO 9000 quality system requirements.
  • Demonstrated competence with computer software packages used within a laboratory or field sampling environment (e.g. lab information system, scheduling software, Microsoft Office).
  • Awareness of safety requirements related to the role and ability to demonstrate personal responsibility for safety and well being

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Certificate, degree or similar qualification in chemistry or equivalent
  • 3 years+ experience in laboratory and environmental chemistry, preferably in the water industry

Essential Requirements:

  • Willing to work outside core hours on a rotational basis, flexible start/finish times between 7am to 7pm to meet contractual obligations
  • Demonstrated experience in LCMSMS or GCMSMS including maintenance, troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities
  • Carry out laboratory preparation and analysis using instrumentation within agreed customer timeframes
  • Identify and report potential opportunities to optimise assets, equipment, systems and processes
  • Training and mentoring staff
  • Undertake Intermediate computer skills working with Microsoft office, Labware (LIMS) and other relevant software packages
  • Proven attention to detail and accuracy in following procedures, documentation and data entry
  • Demonstrated experience working within a team, the ability to prioritise high volumes of work and willingness to learn new tasks
  • Knowledge of quality assurance requirements for analysis of water and wastewater products, including NATA ISO 17025 accreditation and ISO 9000 quality system requirements.
  • Work safely, undertake risk assessments and report hazards and incidents
