Waterway Health Scientist

About the Role:

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to progress environmental studies that inform the provision of wastewater services and products that meet our regulatory obligations and customer expectations. Additionally you will provide guidance, support and subject matter expertise on waterway health across Sydney Water.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the delivery of environmental studies and research to inform wastewater product, service and regulatory improvement programs and defining outcomes for Sydney Water.
  • Champion, review and assure the long, medium and short-term waterway health outcomes are delivered through policy, position statements, wastewater programs and specifications that are informed by sound environmental science to ensure Sydney Water is able to deliver the desired outcomes.
  • Develop, manage and utilise tools to support the decision-making processes when supporting the implementation of changes to wastewater services and environmental regulatory settings.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report the performance, effectiveness and benefits realisation against the delivery of wastewater services/ products and their impact on waterway health.
  • Identify the need for and proactively incorporate waterway health studies into wastewater servicing plans and environmental regulation.

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in science, engineering, or a related discipline or experience deemed equivalent.
  • Experience in delivering evidence based scientific studies to assess waterway health
  • Strong analytical skills to analyse large datasets and identify issues, trends, drivers and links to customer/ regulatory needs.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills at all levels both internal and external to the organisation, with the ability to establish a high degree of credibility
  • Experience working with regulators and state/local government on environmental science based projects (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of the impact that the wastewater network has on the environment, primarily waterways
