About the role

This role will lead the development of an enterprise-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) consistent with best practice, relevant ISO standards and regulatory requirements to support Sydney Water in achieving its strategic outcomes.

You will work collaboratively with stakeholders across the business to ensure effective implementation and integration of the EMS into One Management System (1MS) to enhance user experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with the stakeholders, drive implementation of the EMS to ensure it provides substantially effective controls against the relevant enterprise risks and environmental objectives;
  • Provide specialist EMS advice, training and awareness across the organisation, ensuring EMS requirements are embedded in key processes across the enterprise;
  • Monitor EMS controlled documents to ensure they remain rationalised, current and fit for purpose. Coordinate and support the document owners to conduct regular reviews.
  • Ensure ongoing certification of the EMS by ensuring compliance with ISO 14001 and supporting 3rd party surveillance and certification audits;
  • Lead and coordinate 2nd Line of Assurance (2LOA) of the EMS and ensure alignment with Sydney Water’s integrated assurance model;
  • Monitor and analyse EMS performance data generated from assurance, incident investigations, management reviews, etc to provide trends and actionable insights; and
  • Facilitate continual improvement of the EMS and deliver improvement initiatives in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
  • Flexible and willing to be out in the field, interacting with asset managers and the management of non-financial assets to implement Environment action plans where appropriate.


About you

You are the person who gets things done! You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, combined with good technical knowledge. You can bring a diverse range of stakeholder groups on a journey to success, engaging closely with the business to understand current state and future objectives, build collaborative relationships, and share EMS knowledge and benefits with the broader business. 

You have a good understanding of Environment Management Systems, knowledge of audit standards, and an ability to define and create frameworks that support business requirements.     

You will have:        

  • Tertiary qualification in engineering, science, business or a related discipline or experience deemed equivalent;
  • Lead auditor or the ability to gain lead auditor qualifications; (desirable)
  • Knowledge in Project Management and/or Continuous Improvement (desirable);
  • Experience in development, implementation and continual improvement of management systems or Integrated Management System in a large and complex organisation;
  • Demonstrated experience analysing performance and developing initiatives to improve business process performance;
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with demonstrated ability to partner and influence others to achieve organisations strategic outcomes; and
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills at all levels.
