We’re seeking multiple Waterways Leads to join our expanding Growth and Development team, who will lead Sydney Water’s involvement in delivering waterway outcomes for key urban catchments, in partnership with stakeholders.  

The Waterways Lead develops the direction and service offerings for waterway management primarily focused on collaborative arrangements identified in the Parramatta, Cooks, Georges and Hawkesbury-Nepean catchments. This includes building and maintaining key external and internal relationships, shaping regulatory and policy changes required and demonstrating leading capability in waterway management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Sydney Water’s contribution to the development and delivery of catchment wide strategies for managing urban waterways, by working collaboratively with councils, catchment groups and government agencies. 
  • Provide specialist advice and direction to councils and other partners opening new swim sites under the Urban Plunge service offering.
  • Design and deliver key innovative water related land use planning and urban design projects that support waterway outcomes. 
  • Influence the policy and planning landscape to meet agreed waterway health objectives and address customer and community expectations for healthy waterways.

Essential Criteria:

  • Tertiary degree in one of the following subject areas: Natural Resource Management, Environmental or Social Science, Urban Planning or a related field. 
  • Recognised leader and influencer of industry issues, integrated water management, urban waterway health or water sensitive city concepts with relevant research and best practice experience.
  • Ability to provide intelligent and innovative guidance regarding the current policy, regulation and standards for urban waterway management and urban water servicing.
  • Knowledge of both practical and economic components of natural resource management, stakeholder engagement and strategic planning and understanding of relevant research and best practice standards.
  • Pro-active in influencing decision-making processes with highly developed interpersonal skills, together with high level verbal and written communication skills in sensitive or complex circumstances. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation of strategies, plans, submissions and reports relevant to waterways management.
