Head of Legal, Claims & Secretariat
The purpose of Head of Legal, Claims & Secretariat position is to provide legal, insurance, claims and corporate secretariat advice and support for Sydney Water.
- Lead and provide strategic and commercial legal, insurance, claims and corporate governance advice to the Executive and the Sydney Water Board
- Manage a diverse range of complex legal matters in a dynamic operating context
- Lead Sydney Water’s insurance portfolio and management of claims
- Accountable for ensuring that the initiatives related to the function are delivered by providing leadership and coaching, working collaboratively across the organisation

About the role
The Head of Legal, Claims & Secretariat is accountable for the provision of quality and timely strategic and commercial legal and corporate governance advice and Sydney Water’s insurance placement, technical advisory, recoveries and claims management activities.
The position leads an in-house function of legal, insurance and corporate governance experts who work collaboratively with the business. The role has an enterprise focus and will raise legal, insurance and governance issues for escalation in a way that does not lose sight of the big picture. The position attends the Board and Audit and Risk Board Committee meetings for specific items and the role-holder must be knowledgeable and possess Boardroom gravitas. This position will hold the delegations and authority of the General Counsel for the organisation.
As a member of the senior leadership team, you will be expected to demonstrate the capabilities of Sydney Water’s leadership model. This includes enabling purpose and empower the team by driving / enacting direction that balances the requirements to service the customer, develop a constructive culture and demonstrate commercial focus.
About you
It is important that you have approx. 15 years post admission legal experience, with at least 3 years of leadership experience as the General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer in a regulated industry, preferably with a combination of top-tier private practice law firm and in-house experience. In this position, it is also important that you have/ demonstrate:
- Tertiary qualifications in Law, ideally honours or post-graduate degree.
- Admitted as an Australian lawyer, with a current unrestricted Australian practising certificate.
- Relevant insurance advisory experience and demonstrated experience with managing a complex and diverse portfolio of claims.
- Knowledge of corporate secretariat duties and corporate governance issues.
- Extensive leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to achieve outcomes and business improvement across a multi-disciplinary team.
- Extensive interpersonal, communication, influencing, liaison, negotiating and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to see the big picture without losing sight of the details and their implications
