About the role

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you will perform routine and non-routine analyses of freshwater and marine samples and use a range of equipment in accordance with procedures to meet customer quality and time expectations. This role has a strong focus on molecular biology techniques, particularly PCR, and supports method development and validation within a quality framework.

Key responsibilities:

  • Daily duties include laboratory analysis of samples, data entry, quality control, checks and calibrations
  • Perform biological and molecular analysis of water and wastewater samples, including PCR-based methods, in line with established procedures
  • Develop, validate, and troubleshoot molecular methods to ensure accuracy and reliability of results
  • Maintain high standards of quality control, including data entry, calibrations, and checks
  • Collaborate with team members to meet customer needs and ensure efficient lab operations
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to optimise systems and processes through functional integration with existing workgroups
  • Participate in internal audits and uphold NATA accreditation standard
  • Promote safety and contribute to a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

About you:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Biology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience in PCR techniques including real-time PCR, and method development, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Experience working with environmental matrices such as water, sediment, or wastewater would be desirable
  • Ability to use LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) would be desirable
  • Strong understanding of quality assurance systems, including NATA, ISO17025 and ISO 9001
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to write clear reports using Microsoft packages
  • A team player who can also work independently and adapt to new tasks and equipment.
