What will you be doing?
Reporting to the Environmental Regulatory Manager the Senior Environmental Regulatory Specialist will provide strategic advice and manage projects for environment protection licensing and regulation that supports the achievement of outcomes consistent with Sydney Water’s corporate strategy. Primary focus will involve advice on regulatory reforms, identifying emerging environmental issues, prepare submission papers on Environment Protection Licences and regulatory reforms to NSW Environment Protection Authority to support proposed regulatory changes.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Identify and monitor trends to assess Sydney Water’s environmental performance and compliance
- Maintain awareness of key regulatory reforms in the water industry, other utility sectors, both in Australia and overseas.
- Seek out best practice regulation in other jurisdictions and sectors (Australian and international), to be adapted by Sydney Water.
- Provide advice regarding regulatory reforms that have implications for Sydney Water’s Environment Protection Licences.
- Project manage cross-disciplinary teams for reviews and projects related to Environment Protection Licences, taking expert advice on environmental and health issues from Corporate Strategy and other Groups to explore options for licensing changes and the potential impacts on Sydney Water.
- Coordinate and report on Sydney Water’s obligations in the Memorandum of Understanding with the NSW EPA, including coordinating the Strategic Liaison Group (SLG) meetings with the EPA and writing briefings for the Executive, overseeing the EPA and Sydney Water Strategic Workplan

About you
The successful applicant will have strong analytical skills to identify issues, trends, drivers and links to customer/ regulatory needs, strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and credible stakeholder management with ability to influence and drive change.
- Bachelor’s degree in environment, science engineering, science, or a related discipline or experience deemed equivalent.
- Minimum 4-5 years’ experience in one or more of the following:
- A policy or strategy advisor role in Government or business
- Experience in environmental regulation and approvals
- Experience in managing the relevant legislative, regulatory, policy and governance frameworks applying to Sydney Water
Plus experience working in high performing teams in a positive and constructive environment.
- Basic understanding of quality/cost/risk trade-offs with a lens on short-, medium- and long-term outcomes.
- Basic skills in risk management, financial and economic analysis and using/developing related tools in decision making
- Basic project management skills
