About the Role

The Hydrographer Level 3 role is mostly office based with regular field attendance expected and serves as the technical lead for hydrometric operations. You will provide expert supervision, training, and guidance in the operation, maintenance, and calibration of hydrometric monitoring stations and instrumentation. As the senior hydrometric technician, you will ensure the accurate provision and analysis of specialised hydrometric data and related services across Sydney Water’s water and wastewater networks. A key aspect of this role is enabling a high-performance culture through effective training and coaching, building strong relationships with frontline staff, key stakeholders and external clients, and delivering outcomes despite competing priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive a high-performance culture through training, coaching, and mentoring, fostering collaboration across teams and clients.
  • Prepare hydrometric specifications, technical procedures, schedules, and quality documentation to support hydrometric operations.
  • Lead the collection, validation, and supply of hydrometric data from monitoring stations, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Supervise and mentor others in the use of HYDSTRA and other hydrometric tools.
  • Influence efficient business decisions, responsible procurement, and successful project outcomes.
  • Ensure data delivery deadlines are met, uptime is maintained or improved, and quality standards are achieved.
  • Provide technical knowledge on hydrometric data and network performance, responding promptly to data anomalies and analytical requests.
  • Drive data quality through supervision and retraining of staff to meet KPIs and agreed standards.

Required Experience & Skills

Extensive experience in the water/wastewater industry and supervising field teams.

Strong ability to build relationships with stakeholders, customers, and delivery partners.

Expertise in hydrometric data measurement, analysis, and innovative reporting methods.

Proven experience in hydrometric data collection, validation, and interpretation.

Ability to translate customer requirements into actionable solutions.

Advanced technical skills in HYDSTRA and MS Excel.

Capability to work in varied field conditions with varied hours, including confined spaces within the wastewater network, heights, and adverse weather.

Excellent communication skills with a focus on mentoring and continuous improvement.

Education & Qualifications

Required

  • Diploma in Water Operations (Hydrography) or higher qualification deemed relevant in areas such as Science, Hydrometrics, Engineering, or Data Science.

Desired

  • Additional certifications or training in water resource management, environmental monitoring, or data analytics.

Certifications & Licences

Required

  • Current Driver’s Licence.
  • Confined Spaces Certification.
  • General Construction Induction (White Card).
