About Us

The Energy team currently generates up to 20% of Sydney Water’s energy needs and it is an exciting time of growth as we contribute to implementing Sydney Water’s Net Carbon Zero Plan by 2030.

Our team is focussed on maximising generation of its existing fleet of renewable energy assets (12 cogeneration units at 9 water resource recovery facilities and 3 hydro units).

Renewable energy generation targets will increase from 85 GWh in 2016 to 170 GWh in 2030. Next year we will be operating new cogeneration assets at St Mary’s and Malabar, delivering new solar assets and planning for future opportunities.


About the Role

Reporting to the Production Manager Energy, this position will support up to 11 sites requiring a combination of working from the office, renewable energy asset sites and Flexible Working our way is available. Cogeneration assets are located at Malabar, North Head, Bondi, St Marys, Cronulla, Wollongong, Glenfield, Liverpool and Warriewood. Hydro assets are located at Prospect, North Head and Woronora.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate maintenance activities for Renewable Energy Generation (REG) Assets, working closely with the REG O&M Contractor.
  • Oversee prioritisation and delivery of operational and maintenance tasks, to meet asset availability targets and budget. Any downtime represents lost power generation opportunity and lost revenue. Consider cost, downtime and risks when deciding whether to repair, replace or refurbish equipment.
  • Manage operational and maintenance projects, including liaison with maintenance service providers and contractors, to support production and asset availability, quality and safety standards.
  • Use asset management systems including field mobility system and Maximo or similar to coordinate operations and maintenance activities
  • Use financial management systems for procurement of goods/ services (e.g. SAP)
  • Interface with Reliability Engineer & Process Engineer to support asset prioritisation and planning
  • Provide input to asset failure or safety investigations, identify, implement, and monitor improvement initiatives
  • Provide input to risk assessments
  • Assist in the implementation and/or improvement of Quality and Information Management System(s


About you

This role is well suited to someone who can build strong and effective relationships and leverage the technical skills of our contractors. We are looking for a team member with operational experience, an ability to manage multiple tasks and high capability using asset management and financial systems.

  • Degree qualifications in engineering / science, or mechanical / electrical / instrumentation trade qualifications or equivalent experience 
  • Certificate IV - Water Operations or equivalent experience desirable 
  • Demonstrated planning and work prioritisation skills in a changing work environment across multiple sites/teams 
  • Demonstrated process understanding and/or experience in production or manufacturing environment within Water, Wastewater, Recycled Water, and/or Resource Recovery facilities or equivalent 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in working in a high-paced operational team environment and experience in planning and prioritising work for teams,  
  • Experience with planning and scheduling tools, SCADA systems, Microsoft Office application and ability to use customised software packages
