About the Role

Sydney Water is seeking a skilled and proactive Technical Business Customer Operations Lead to join our Business Customer Accounts team. This role is ideal for a professional with a strong background in governance, risk management, and technical policy development, particularly in the context of environmental and public health risk.

You will play a key role in supporting the development and implementation of frameworks that ensure effective governance, assurance, and compliance across Business Customer Accounts. Your work will help manage significant asset, environmental, and public health risks, while also guiding internal teams and educating high-risk, high-value business customers.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of technical programs and frameworks that manage governance, risk, compliance, and assurance across Business Customer Accounts.
  • Provide expert guidance on trade waste management, source control, and backflow prevention to protect public health and support regulatory compliance.
  • Develop clear, practical technical documentation and policy positions to support internal teams and educate high-risk, high-value customers.
  • Monitor and report on technical initiatives aligned with strategic business plans, ensuring continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including councils, industry bodies, and regulatory agencies.
  • Represent Sydney Water in industry forums and manage external consultants or contractors as needed.
  • Support business transformation initiatives and contribute to a culture of safety, customer focus, and operational excellence.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Science, Engineering).
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the water industry, with a focus on wastewater or trade waste operations.
  • Proven experience in technical policy development and implementation.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, ideally within a utility or government agency.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical programs and provide strategic insight.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, including influencing senior leaders and external partners.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to distil complex technical information into clear, actionable insights.
  • In-depth knowledge of backflow prevention and associated risk management.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively across all levels of an organisation.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment or trade waste source control is highly desirable.
