An exciting opportunity has become available or arisen for a Water Quality Analyst level 4 – Chemistry Laboratory to join the Customer Experience team within Sydney Water.

We are the largest dedicated water and wastewater laboratory in the southern hemisphere with Tier 1 quality in our laboratory and field performance. This allows us to provide the highest level of assurance to the community of Sydney Water’s quality product.

We undertake sampling and analysis across all products, such as source water, drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, environmental waters (i.e. river, beaches, ocean sediments), stormwater, biosolids, sludges, grit & screenings.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chemistry Laboratory Manager, your daily duties include undertaking preparation and instrumental analyses of samples in accordance with procedures to meet customer quality, time expectations, regulatory and operational requirements.

Level 4 Analysts are expected to be approved signatories across a variety of inorganic methods. Carry out complex investigations and resolve abnormal operations. Provide leadership and technical expertise in method development and validation. Provide advice on results and assess appropriate selection of methods. Train and mentor individuals, assist in the supervision of teams for all aspects of operation, quality, and safety.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Certificate, degree or similar qualification in chemistry or equivalent
  • 10 years+ experience in laboratory and environmental chemistry, preferably in water industry with Inorganic chemistry experience

Essential Requirements:

  • Willing to work outside core hours on a rotational basis, flexible start/finish times between 7am to 6pm to meet contractual obligations
  • Demonstrated experience in multiple water and soil laboratory preparatory functions for inorganic analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, troubleshoot and maintain scientific instrumentation in line with Inorganic chemistry such as Flow Injection Analysis, Discrete Analyser, Ion Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma Analysis for water and soil matrices within agreed customer timeframe
  • Demonstrated ability to perform method development and validation
  • Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement initiatives and completing complex projects within assigned time and resources.
  • Identify and report potential opportunities to optimise assets, equipment, systems, and processes
  • Training and mentoring staff
  • Demonstrated experience working within a team, the ability to prioritise high volumes of work and willingness to learn new tasks
  • Knowledge of quality assurance requirements for analysis of water and wastewater products, including NATA ISO 17025 accreditation and ISO 9000 quality system requirements.
  • Work safely, undertake risk assessments and report hazards and incidents
