What’s the role and Who are we looking for?

The Product Leader – Energy and Recovered Resources will report to the Head of Water Resource Recovery and will provide a single point of accountability within Sydney Water for energy generation, purchasing and efficient use, and the beneficial use of recovered resources such as recycled water and biosolids. Sydney Water is one of the largest energy users in NSW, with a current annual electricity budget of over $70m. The effective management of energy is required to minimise the impact on customer bills whilst also changing the way we purchase and use energy to meet strategic objectives such as carbon net zero by 2030 and increased energy market participation. The role will also be responsible for managing over $30m/year of key Sydney Water contracts for energy, biosolids and outsourced operations and maintenance.

As a Level 4 Manager, you will lead a team of 3 direct reports and up to 20 indirect team members. You will have 10 to 15 years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater and/or recycled water treatment plants, renewable energy generation assets (Cogen, Hydro and Solar) or similar FMCG or continuous industrial process environment.

Demonstrating your knowledge and skills in managing complex customer/regulator/stakeholder relationships you will also have the following experience:

  • Extensive experience at a senior level in managing technical issues relating to operations or maintenance of operating assets.
  • Experience in energy and carbon markets, energy purchasing and energy efficiency
  • Experience in managing large, long-term contracts.
  • Demonstrated contractual management and commercial acumen.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a varied team environment and operate as part of a leadership team.
  • Demonstrated experience in emergency and incident management.
  • Demonstrated high level ability to communicate with impact using highly developed written & verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in influencing senior management and stakeholders on strategic issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in building effective business and stakeholder relationships.
  • Demonstrated high level strategic thinking experience with significant impact at the 5-to-10-year horizons.
  • Proven success in leading change and establishing new ways of working in a complex environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and management of quality assurance systems
